EQ Team Spotlight: Maia R.

What is your professional background, and what brought you to Equilibria?

My background is in customer service, specifically in the art world, managing teams. However, my passion for cannabis began when my father was ill with cancer. I was his caretaker through the end of his life. We were lucky enough that a family friend was one of his doctor’s. He brought up cannabis and the great results they saw with it. I was living in California at the time, right at the start of the medical cannabis program. As his caretaker, I would go to the dispensaries and determine what cultivars benefited him the most.

After my father passed away, I became passionate about the power of cannabis as medicine. I began to work with other people on their end-of-life journey to help them navigate their use of cannabis. So much of the information, especially in the early days, was spotty or hard to find. It was evident how important education was. California now has a robust medical marijuana program but even now, when you walk into a dispensary, the budtenders may not always have all the information and education necessary to help guide someone to ensure their cannabis routine works for them and their health goals.

When I met Marcy at Ellementa, a women’s cannabis group, she mentioned starting a business that would be education-forward, and so they asked me to come and build out the education department.

It was a beautiful melding of my management background and cannabis education.

What is your favorite weekly meeting at EQ?

My favorite meeting is the dosage meeting because it’s a chance for me to connect with these brilliant women on my team. I am constantly learning from them.

We spend time talking about our members. We start by figuring out who is struggling, and what techniques we can use to support these women, and then share stories about some of our wins and the women we’ve been able to help – which really fills your cup.

In addition to spending time on the member experience and education, we also spend time learning. We share research projects, write blogs, and create educational materials to aid our members in their own journeys.

We often end our meetings with a guided meditation or something else to help us focus inward. It’s a very different format than any other meeting at our company, and that is why I love it!

What is the best career lesson you have learned as a leader at Equilibria?

You’re capable of more than you think you are. Just because you don’t know how to do something doesn’t mean you can’t teach yourself.

I’ve also learned that it is okay not to know everything, if you’re smart and capable you can always find the answer.

The important thing is learning to ask the right questions.

Maia’s #myEQ

Now that I’m pregnant, I’ve been using topicals only. The Relief Balm is wonderful for lower-back discomfort and foot relief.

Before being pregnant, I loved Daily Drops! I took a full dropper day and night, and then whenever I needed extra relief during the day, like before an IG Live or meeting, I’d take a small dose. Usually, I would take about 20-25 milligrams per day!
