CBD and Caffeine: Everything You Need To Know

What is Caffeine?

CBD & Caffeine

Most of us are familiar that caffeine is a main active component in the popular beverage coffee. But what really is caffeine and how does it work?

According to Harvard’s Nutrition Source, caffeine is a chemical that is naturally occurring in seeds, fruit, leaves, coffee beans, cacao beans, and other plants native to the South America and East Asia regions. Research has indicated that caffeine interacts with adenosine receptors and has been known to stimulate the central nervous system to offer a source of energy and mental alertness to its consumers.

Did you know?

  • 1 cup or 8 oz of coffee contains about 95mg of caffeine
  • 1 oz of dark chocolate has about 24mg of caffeine
  • 1 cup of black tea holds about 47mg of caffeine, while 1 cup of green tea contains about 28mg of caffeine

How Does CBD Work?

CBD supports our body by communicating with a system we have designed to create and support balance.

The Endocannabinoid System (ECS) is a system of receptors used to sustain balance across functions in the body associated with energy, stress, sleep, mood, and so much more. The body creates compounds, or endocannabinoids, to transmit messages to the ECS on how to promote balance across the body. Stress on the body can lead to the depletion of our endocannabinoids, and an imbalanced ECS.

CBD mirrors our own body’s molecules and signals to the ECS on how to reestablish balance across the various systems. When CBD is used daily, it may restore function to your ECS and in turn help you have more energy to get through your days.

How Do CBD and Caffeine Work Together?

CBD & Caffeine

While more research is needed to truly understand how caffeine and CBD work together, we do know they both work on our adenosine receptors, aka our sleep-wake receptors. Caffeine blocks the effects of adenosine, helping us feel more alert and ready to take on the day; and CBD improves the efficiency of our adenosine receptors.

Caffeine and CBD appear to work synergistically. When taken together, they both produce increased alertness and concentration. Many people also report feeling less jittery, with smoother, longer lasting effects.

CBD may also be a helpful tool in managing caffeine withdrawal. It’s all anecdotal at this point, but some swear that CBD helps alleviate unpleasant symptoms. You just may find it’s worth a try!

But what about CBD and coffee specifically? If you’re looking to deep dive further into how to use CBD with your brew, we’ve got you covered.

5 of our most asked questions and answers about CBD and caffeine:

Can I take my CBD with my morning cup of coffee?

Our members report that taking their CBD alongside their java gives them a boost of energy while simultaneously offering calming benefits. Many of our members who use CBD together with their coffee tell us they notice a reduction in their “coffee jitters”.

Can CBD replace my morning cup of coffee?

Some of the members of our community have found that they no longer need their morning mocha to get the day started. They tell us that after getting better quality sleep at night, they don’t feel like they need to drink coffee. Other members prefer to take small doses of CBD, like a ½ dropper in the morning, to notice a boost and increase focus instead of their morning cup of joe.

Can I put my Daily Drops right into my coffee?

While you can add your Daily Drops to your cup of coffee, they may not be as effective when added to your beverage. Instead, try taking a dose of CBD 10-15 minutes before your cup of brew to allow its effects to kick in just as you’re starting to enjoy the caffeine boost. We recommend holding your Daily Drops under your tongue for at least one minute for best results.

Can creamer in my coffee act as a fat source for the Softgels?

Some of our members do use coffee creamer as a fat to take with their CBD Softgel. For best efficacy, we suggest incorporating more substantial healthy fats alongside your Softgel, such as avocado or nut butter.

Can CBD help reduce an upset stomach from coffee?

It’s possible. We know some of us experience unwanted effects from your morning brew, like an upset stomach. CBD interacts with cannabinoid receptors in the ECS, and research has shown there are cannabinoid receptors present in the digestive system.
