Don’t Like The Taste of CBD? Try These Tips

If you are brand new to the exciting world of CBD—or even a seasoned veteran—you may have noticed that it is available in a fancy-sounding format. A tincture.

A tincture, a liquid solution of a substance, is a popular and effective method to utilize CBD. Taken under the tongue, this route of administration is referred to as sublingual or buccal administration. Why are so many cannabis products made this way? It is a convenient, easy way to consume CBD and cannabis that allows for maximum bioavailability (more supplements in your body, therefore, increasing therapeutic effects). What is great about this method is that the CBD gets absorbed directly into your bloodstream. It also misses “first-pass metabolism”, which means it goes directly into your bloodstream without having to pass through your gastrointestinal (GI) system waiting to be absorbed, to then have to pass through the liver breaking down in the CYP50 system and then out of the portal vein into the systemic bloodstream.

Quite a route!

skeptical about CBD? not all CBD is created equallyWhen you take sublingual tinctures, there is no waiting. All you have to do is point the dropper under your tongue, hold for 30-90 seconds as specified, and the CBD goes directly into your bloodstream. It is important to take a second to explain why missing first-pass metabolism is of such importance here. Passing through the liver decreases the concentration of a drug, specifically when administered orally, thus it is greatly reducing it before it reaches systemic circulation. Therefore, if you take 20mg of CBD sublingually, as in a tincture, you will absorb 30% (6mg) of 20mg into your bloodstream. If you take 20mg of CBD orally, you will have 5-10% (1mg/2mg) in your bloodstream. Stomach acids and liver enzymes destroy much of the CBD, and a large dose of CBD is further excreted unchanged in feces when taken orally. Lots of wasted CBD!

One downside of a tincture is that some folks just don’t love the taste. Some CBD products can taste very “hempy.” The way I describe the taste to my clients is that it is like eating a tree or like chewing a joint. One of the reasons I often recommend Equilibria over other products is that not only do they have high-quality products, they also taste great! While some people may be indifferent to the taste, I recommend Equilibria often to clients that don’t enjoy the “tree-like” taste. Those are the terpenes in the CBD, and they are actually good for you. Not everything good for you tastes great, but Equilibria makes fantastic flavors that allow the use of a good quality CBD without the harsh taste.

Don’t like the taste of CBD? Try these tips

Flavored CBD

While the Daily Drops are great, all real CBD and cannabis tinctures have the “tree-like” taste element, with some stronger than others. I have often recommended Equilibria’s Mint Daily Drops for my clients with nausea and other flavors for clients that didn’t grow into liking the hemp taste.

What’s exciting is that Equilibria has launched a new line of flavored drops, The Indulgence Collection. I can’t stress enough how difficult it is for me to find quality cannabis products that taste great while keeping all of the good cannabinoids and terpenes in the product. Inspired by Parisian patisserie flavors, The Indulgence Collection features a trio of mini Daily Drops including Peach Gelée, Mint Chocolate Truffle, and Strawberry Shortcake.

Pair CBD with a beverage

I often recommend drinking a paired beverage after holding the tincture under your tongue to help with the taste. For example, with the Mint Daily Drops, I recommend using tea or hot cocoa. Pair the strawberry shortcake or peach gelée with herbal tea or seltzer water.

Mix with honey

What if you still don’t love the taste and texture but want to get all the therapeutic benefits from CBD? Honey! Honey has a ton of great therapeutic properties in and of itself. You can take a tiny spoonful of honey, drop the solution into the honey and place it under your tongue. It’s true, honey always helps the medicine go down! Coconut oil or MCT oil pairs nicely as well and helps take away some of the thin oily texture.

Try gum or hard candy afterward

Lastly, gum or lollipops help as a final resort if none of the above recommendations work for you. Put the tincture in your mouth followed by chewing on some gum or sucking on some hard candy. It will help get more CBD into your gums AND you will swallow less of the substance.

Again, tinctures are a highly effective method to get the most benefit out of CBD. I encourage my clients to give tinctures a try, building up to help them become comfortable to use them daily and receive the most therapeutic benefits.

What Are Terpenes? Everything You Need To Know

With terms such as “CBD” and “THC” becoming mainstream, you may have also heard the word “terpene” thrown around but have not known exactly what it was—or thought that this was deep-into-the-culture cannabis user lingo. That’s not the case! Terpenes are easy to understand and may add potential therapeutic benefits to your CBD experience (the research is still ongoing).

What are Terpenes?

Terpenes don’t just exist in cannabis plants, they are naturally occurring substances in many plants and are responsible for the fragrance, taste, and pigment of plants and are often isolated for use in essential oils and aromatherapy. (Sahu 2013) There seems to be some evidence that terpenes can influence various therapeutic properties of THCa and CBDa within different strains of cannabis plants. Per a 2019 study, “the correlation in a particular strain between THCA or CBDA and a certain set of terpenoids, and the partial specificity in interaction may have influenced the cultivation of cannabis and may have implications for therapeutic treatments.” (Namdar 2019)

One problem, so far, is that we don’t fully understand quite how cannabinoid terpenes work on humans. A study from March 2020 concluded that terpenes may work, but they don’t work how the industry assumedvia the entourage effect (cannabinoids and terpenes working together) with CBD and THC. Terpenoids don’t work directly on CB1 or CB2 receptors like the cannabinoids CBD or THC. A recent paper published fairly recently also called for a more scientific review of terpenes in cannabis and the therapeutic benefits that are happening. (Booth 2019)

What Are TerpenesCannabinoids and Terpenes

Let’s do a quick review here: How do cannabis and CBD actually work? Within our body, we have an endocannabinoid system, which is quite similar to the endorphin system (endorphins are chemicals produced by the body to relieve stress and pain). The endocannabinoid system is very, very old (evolutionarily speaking) and sits within our central nervous system, but also has many different receptors within all of our major organ systems that send and receive signals with a variety of effectshelping to boost hunger, effects on sleep and sex drive, modulating discomfort, inflammation, and emotions.

The most abundant of these receptors are CB1, located in our central nervous system, and CB2 which is located everywhere else throughout our body. We make our own cannabinoids that act on these receptors, but it seems like our body may also like and perhaps need phytocannabinoids (those from plants) like CBD and THC to help keep these vital functions running smoothly and to make life enjoyable. Phytocannabinoids in cannabis, like THC, CBD, CBN (and 141 others!), act on CB1 and CB2 receptors. In fact, the different cannabinoids compete for these receptors and this, in turn, can make the cannabinoids work better. This is called the entourage effect which I alluded to earlier.

Despite not knowing the exact mechanism of how terpenes work or affect us, that doesn’t mean there aren’t any therapeutic effects.

Since terpenes also exist in other plants, we can take what we know so far and apply it to the cannabis world. For example, lavender helps to relax us and in one study has been shown to be just as effective as Xanax. (Woelk 2010) This theory transferred over to the cannabis world is what makes scientists and clinicians wonder if there is something more to the terpenes in cannabis.

There’s a wide variety of terpenes that could provide various therapeutic effects that I have listed below. If you choose to use CBD or cannabis strains like Sativa or Indica (THC cannabis), then terpenes are one factor to be aware of in that their presence within specific strains may help with specific therapeutic goals.

What Are Terpenes | equilibria daily dropsOne of the reasons why I love Equilibria products is that they conduct third-party testing on all of their products. This means that customers can be sure that they are getting exactly what they want and no other substances. One important factor that third-party testing looks at is terpene profiles.

Equilibria’s Daily Drops are high in B-Caryophyllene and Bisabolol which are great terpenes for inflammation, both of which have shown to also have antimicrobial properties in animal studies. The Softgels are high in B-Caryophyllene, Pinene, Humulene, and Myrcene, while the Relief Cream is high in Linalool. These terpenes remain in Equilibria products because the products are full-spectrum which means you are getting all of the goodness from the plant.

Terpenes are becoming so popular that companies that were extracting terpenes out of their products are starting to artificially add them back in. While this might seem like a good idea, data is accumulating that re-added terpenes can cause various unpleasant—and sometimes dangerous—side effects. Re-added terpenes can be dangerous in products like dabs, shatter, and the many vaping THC products sold at gas stations and vape shops. It is much safer to obtain THC products from an accredited dispensary and CBD products, such as those mentioned above from Equilibria, that have no artificially added terpenes. And if you use THC cannabis, whole-plant cannabis is always your best bet to get a plant loaded with terpenes and cannabinoids for the greatest desired therapeutic effect. If all else fails, a message to your friendly cannabis nurse always helps set you on the right track!

Daily Treatment Oil

Our first face and body oil is formulated with nothing but 500mg full-spectrum CBD and seven nutrient-rich botanicals including Organic Sweet Almond Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Evening Primrose, Olive Squalane, Grapefruit Oil, and Litseas Oil. We left out skin irritants like parabens, petroleum derivatives, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances so your skin is left feeling hydrated, soft, and happy.

We love using this multi-purpose oil as the last step in our skincare routines to lock in moisture, on cuticles, and to soothe any other dry and irritated areas. No matter where you decide to apply it, keep in mind that daily, consistent use is key to maximizing results.

Mindful Mineral Soak

Boasting over 30 minerals, this powerful soak is delicately infused with 200mg of full-spectrum, premium CBD to purify and destress. Gardenia and Jasmine aromatic oil blends nourish skin and invigorate senses with modern floral and grapefruit notes.

Simply pour ¼ of the bag into a warm bath and enjoy. Since Mindful Mineral Soak is salt-based, it’s a great tool for sore muscle relief. One bag included enough salts for 4x baths to relax and de-stress.

If you’re not a bath person, our Dosage Specialists recommend plugging up your drain and adding the salts to your shower — the entire bathroom will smell amazing and your feet will get to soak up all the relief!

All 3 of these topicals can be powerful tools for fast relief and because they do not enter the bloodstream the same way CBD does when you orally ingest it, they’re perfectly safe to use as frequently as you’d like. FAQ’s We Receive During Dosage Calls

1. Why full-spectrum?

Full-spectrum products are more effective problem-solvers than pure CBD alone. This is because CBD works best when surrounded by other cannabinoids found in the plant, including its more well-known sister THC (even in small amounts). The combined chemical reaction is known as “the ensemble effect” or “the entourage effect.” This means the cannabinoids boost each other and work together to achieve their goal.

Bonus Fact: Equilibria has one of the largest varieties of cannabinoids and terpenes (scented organic compounds) than any other “full-spectrum” industrial hemp strain on the market. This means you get the best possible results from our premium products!

2. Will your products get me high?

full-spectrum CBD

The short answer is no. The .3% of the THC in full-spectrum CBD is there so you can reap the full benefits. THC and the other components that make up full-spectrum CBD work synergistically to amplify one another. To get even more technical, CBD is one of over 150 naturally-occurring compounds (aka “cannabinoids”) found in the Cannabis Sativa plant. The Cannabis Sativa plant is bred and grown in two different ways:

  • As “industrial hemp” with less than 0.3% THC content. Which makes it a completely federally legal agricultural crop in the U.S. and will not get you high
  • As “marijuana” with up to 30% THC content. THC is the psychoactive part of cannabis. And in higher amounts (more than 5%) it causes the intoxicating “high” effect.

3. I experience chronic discomfort, should I be using extra-strength products?

When people are experiencing chronic discomfort, Maia, our Head of Member Success, typically recommends taking a larger CBD dose which varies from person to person. She suggests sticking with regular strength products for at least one month and setting up an appointment with one of our dosage specialists before your next product shipment so they can help you adjust your routine accordingly. However, if you are not feeling any effects after 30 days of consistent use, that’s likely an indication you’ll need to bump yourself up to extra strength products.

4. Why isn’t CBD working for me?

It’s very normal for CBD to take a few weeks to show its effects. So if you’ve been trying CBD for about a week and aren’t seeing what you want, that’s OK! We typically recommend trying your CBD products for the first 5-7 days with the starting instructions. Then meet with your Dosage Specialist to talk about your experience so far and make any changes. If you’re not seeing your desired results with CBD, oftentimes the missing ingredient is more time.

5. When will I feel the full effects?

FAQs We Receive During Dosage Calls | How good sleep benefits your quality of lifeCBD does take time to build up in your system, so whether or not you start out with the right routine — this is not wasted time! We love seeing positive results in the first 1-3 weeks but often see the BEST results after 2-3 months. Consistency is key!

CBD Oil vs Capsules: Which One Is Right For You?

Whether you’re looking to improve your sleep, reduce your situational stress, or light a match under your libido, there is a bevy of reasons to incorporate CBD into your wellness routine. After all, the naturally occurring compound, or phytocannabinoid, that’s derived from industrial hemp flowers has been shown in clinical trials to bolster mental and physical well-being when taken properly and consistently.

But if you’re new to using CBD, you might find yourself feeling a bit overwhelmed by the various forms of delivery. Two of the most popular are CBD oil and CBD capsules. “The Daily Drops and the Softgels work differently within the body. So having different delivery methods available makes it easier to personalize a routine best suited to your personal needs and body chemistry,” explains Maia Reed, Head of Member Success at Equilibria.

Here’s what you need to know.

CBD Oil vs Capsules

What Is CBD Oil?

CBD Oil vs CapsulesCBD oil is extracted from the resinous flower (trichomes) of cannabis plants, including industrial hemp. Which is legally defined as cannabis with less than 0.3 percent THC by dry weight, according to Project CBD. “Although much can be derived from the whole plant, it’s actually in the trichomes of the flower where the cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids are concentrated,” says Reed.

By targeting the flower, the oil won’t include other components of the planet that threaten to reduce its efficacy. Such as resins, fibers, chlorophyll, and leaves, explains Reed. “Extraction from the flower only yields a full-spectrum extract, with significantly more phytocannabinoids and terpenes,” she notes.

The flower used for Equilibria’s full-spectrum CBD-containing Daily Drops comes directly from an organic hemp farm run by a team of bioscientists. “We have an obsession with genetics and meticulously control the entire supply chain, from seed all the way to your doorstep,” notes Reed.

Once it has been harvested by hand, dried, and cured, it goes through a CO2 extraction process, which allows the preservation of a full spectrum of cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, essential oils, and amino acids.

Then, the full-spectrum hemp oil is combined with a carrier oil. Which in Equilbria’s case is a coconut-derived MCT oil. “MCT oil is our carrier oil of choice because it has one of the highest concentrations of fat-soluble compounds,” says Reed. “MCT molecules are smaller than normal molecules, which make them easier for the body — especially, the liver — to process.”

The final product is the Daily Drops, which are held under the tongue to allow for sublingual absorption. “This means the CBD enters your bloodstream more directly. Resulting in an onset time of 10-30 minutes with effects lasting between 4-6 hours,” says Reed.

What Are CBD Capsules?

CBD Oil vs CapsulesWhether dosing with a tincture under your tongue isn’t your cup of tea, you want to be especially sure you’re getting a consistent dose every time. Or you’d like to take CBD as you would a supplement, capsules, or Equilibria’s Daily Softgels, might be your best bet. Because capsules are absorbed through the gut and modified in the liver, the CBD spreads fairly evenly throughout the body, notes ProjectCBD

The process? “After following all of the steps laid out above, rather than simply filling up the Daily Drops bottles, we take the extra step to encapsulate the oil in the Softgels,” explains Reed.

It bears noting that not all CBD capsules are made equally. Some are CBD isolate, meaning CBD has been isolated away from the rest of the plant. And others are labeled broad-spectrum, meaning they’re THC free. “CBD is actually just one important phytocannabinoid,” points out Reed. “THC is also a phytocannabinoid; they’re the two famous ones. But there are well over one hundred that have been discovered in the plant thus far. And they each have their own therapeutic properties. There are also terpenes, which are like the essential oils of the plant, and have their own beneficial properties.”

In other words, to get the greatest benefit from a CBD product, you’ll do best to choose one (like Equilibria’s Daily Softgels) that is full-spectrum. This means it offers a wide variety of phytocannabinoids (including THC, albeit less than .3% so it cannot get you high and it’s federally legal) and terpenes. “When combined, these components act synergistically and amplify one other’s therapeutic properties,” says Reed. “Scientists call this the entourage effect.”

Pro-tip: CBD is fat-soluble, so taking your softgel with a healthy fat, like avocado or nut butter, can increase the amount your body is able to get out of it, points out Reed.

Benefits of CBD Oil

Benefits of CBD Oil Reed notes that CBD oil, or Equilibria’s Daily Drops, might be preferred if you’re looking to address acute wellness woes, like period cramps, a feeling of overwhelm in the middle of the day. Or a racing mind when you’re trying to drift off to sleep at night.

Equilibria member Kristine S. can attest to this. Having suffered from “debilitating period cramps” her whole life, Kristine found that regular Daily Drops use has helped to curb her pain. “I still had some discomfort. But I wasn’t dosing Advil every four hours like I normally would,” she notes.

The Drops have also helped Equilibria member Shelby R. combat stressful moments and physical symptoms (neck strain, headaches) throughout the day. What’s more, she started taking the Daily Drops at bedtime and noticed that she was able to fall asleep faster and more consistently.

Another perk: “The Drops can also be administered in smaller doses, which can be helpful when trying to find your CBD ‘sweet spot,’” says Reed.

Benefits of CBD Capsules

Benefits of CBD Capsules | How good sleep benefits your quality of lifeOn the other hand, CBD capsules, or Equilibria’s Daily Softgels, can be taken like a vitamin. As they’re easy to fold into a daily routine and offer the benefit of a slow release. “Because the Softgels have to make their way through the digestive system they act as a slow release with an onset time of one to three hours and effects lasting six to eight hours,” says Reed. “The Daily Softgels act as an insurance policy, working behind the scenes all day — or night.”

This can be especially helpful when you’re looking to get a deeper quality of rest or feel more balanced or even-keeled throughout the day—two benefits that Equilibria members have reported experiencing with Daily Softgel use.

June K., a high school special education teacher who has experienced a roller coaster of change at work during the pandemic, says they’ve been especially helpful for addressing her anxiety. “I have been feeling calm throughout the day and have been getting through my to-do list with no problem. I’ve been better about ‘letting things go’ or telling myself ‘this can wait’ without getting so anxious about what could happen if I didn’t grade something by tonight,” she notes.

CBD Oil vs. CBD Capsules: Which Is Better?

While you and your best friend might be quite like-minded, chances are that you don’t experience the downstream effects of stress in the same exact way. And while your cycle might be synced up with your coworkers’ — thanks to all that virtual time together — you probably don’t contend with the same period-related strife. For the same reason, deciding whether to incorporate CBD oil or CBD capsules into your wellness routine is sure to be a personal, individualized journey.

The good news is that you don’t have to navigate that path solo. You can work with a Dosage Specialist to find out which delivery method best suits your needs and goals. You can book an appointment with us at or send us an email at [email protected] if you have questions about how to get started!

Why Full Spectrum CBD?

Whether you’re a CBD veteran or new to the party, finding the right dose and product for you can be a long and confusing process. With new companies entering the market every day, there are tons of options that promise the same results: better quality of rest, increased focus, sustainable stress management, you name it. But how do you know which products will actually perform?

Why Full Spectrum CBD and is it right for you?

Why Full Spectrum CBD?Within the world of CBD, products can be categorized into three groups: Full Spectrum, Broad Spectrum, and Isolate. At Equilibria, we offer a Full Spectrum product, which means the power of the entire hemp plant is neatly packaged into your little white, gold, and black containers.

While Full Spectrum CBD is not for everyone, science shows that this type of formulation is often the most effective at the lowest doses; and here at Equilibria, science is the name of the game.

Entourage Effect

Although there is still lots of work to be done in the realm of CBD/cannabis research, one thing we do know is that CBD is most efficacious when it is participating in the Entourage Effect. The easiest way to understand the Entourage Effect is to imagine your CBD as a participant in a team sport- let’s say soccer.

In order to win a soccer game, not only do you need to score goals. But you need to keep the other team from scoring as well. CBD working alone would be like fielding your team with just a goalie. With lots of effort, surely the goalie could keep the other team from scoring. But that goalie will be hard-pressed to score their own goals and bring home a win. It can just be too overwhelming to try and do both well!

Now, when that goalie has team members, not only will protecting the goal become much easier for each individual through shared work, but it will also increase the team’s chances of scoring a goal too! The Entourage Effect put simply, is like having team members. The more hands-on-deck we have to work toward a common goal, the better! When CBD has the other components of the hemp plant there to help it out, its job as team leader becomes a lot more productive.

Let’s Compare…

Why Full Spectrum CBD?Isolate CBD products only have CBD. So there are no helpers around to give CBD the boost it needs to work its best. Since CBD is working alone, many people need higher doses to accomplish their health goals than they would need with a product that keeps the teammates around. This is typically where we see higher potency doses, reaching up to 3000-5000mg and beyond. The reason for this is simple. There are no teammates to help, so the formula needs MUCH more CBD for it to be effective.

While Broad Spectrum products do include some of CBD’s teammates, they are missing one key component. And that component is THC. Full Spectrum products, on the other hand, keep THC in the formula. Albeit in teeny tiny amounts (each of our products contains <<0.3% THC, which means it won’t get you high and it’s federally legal).

A good Full Spectrum product utilizes even the smallest amounts of THC. Because we know that THC is the greatest sidekick CBD can find.

While the other cannabinoids (CBD and THC are just two of a plethora of therapeutic compounds synthesized by the hemp plant) and terpenes (essential oils of the plant) play a key role in boosting the efficacy of CBD, THC is our top scorer and largely contributes to how well the team performs as a whole. Molecularly, it helps direct CBD to participate in the proper chemical interactions that eventually lead to therapeutic results. Without it, you’ll need more CBD to ensure enough of those necessary interactions take place.

If you’ve done your research, you’ll notice that our products come in relatively low doses. On average, our members are taking around 20-30mg of CBD a day. Which is significantly lower than you typically see with either Broad Spectrum or Isolate products.

If you’re looking for the lowest possible dose you can use to achieve therapeutic benefits, Full Spectrum CBD may be the right formula for you.

The Equilibria Difference

Why you should take CBD everydayAlong with producing a Full Spectrum product, you can also be sure that your Equilibria CBD will always be non-GMO, gluten and dairy-free, single-sourced, and free of pesticides and heavy metal solvents. Single-sourced is the term most people are unfamiliar with when it comes to the production of CBD. But whenever you are in the market for a CBD product it is one of the most important things you can look for.

Having a single-sourced CBD product means we know where that CBD comes from. And at Equilibria, we take it a step further. Our CBD is extracted only from the flowers of organic hemp plants, the highest source of therapeutic compounds. No white labeling, no stems, and seeds, no harmful additives or questionable extraction processes. We have our own 1,100-acre farm in Colorado. So we can guarantee quality and consistency at every step in the production process.

Still unsure if our Full Spectrum CBD is the right fit, or how to use it properly? Well, you’re in luck! We have a team of Dosage Specialists ready to answer your questions and help craft a routine that both addresses your health goals and fits your lifestyle. From advising on which products to get and how to use them to best suit your needs, we’ve got you covered; all you need to do now is take the leap and let your Full Spectrum teammates help restore balance to your life.
